Corporal Eric Streeter was shot and killed while following two escapees from the county jail. He had noticed the suspects driving in traffic and began to follow them while he waited for backup. The suspects saw that they were being followed, stopped the car, and opened fire, killing Corporal Streeter.
The 22-year-old killer was apprehended in Tampa three weeks later. He was convicted of premeditated first-degree murder and sentenced to life.
Corporal Streeter had been with the agency for eight years. He was survived by his wife and children. One son later became a Florida State Trooper.
