Today, February 20 is National Handcuff Day. On this day in 1912, Inventor George Carney was given a patent number in the United States for his new invention. However, the name attached to the device was “lightweight and adjustable swinging bow ratchet-type handcuff.” This new style closely resembles the design of cuffs that are used today.
The history of handcuffs dates back to 500 AD. They were used more for prisoners of war. However, as the crime rate rose in society, the Hiatt Handcuff was developed in 1780. However, they were large, heavy, and clumsy.
Over time, improvements were made when the “Snap,” the “Twister,” and finally the adjustable handcuffs produced by John Tower in 1865.
Since then, the design of handcuffs has stood the test of time. Small adjustments have been made, but most handcuffs work similarly to Tower’s cuffs. So now you know. Go forth and celebrate National Handcuff Day!
