PENSACOLA POLICE OFFICERS WILL DON SUMMER GARB TODAY

By Mike Simmons

Every spring and fall, we all put up our winter clothes or pull them out. It’s a necessary tradition. The Pensacola Police Department is no exception. In 1936, it was mandatory to change out the uniforms on the same day. In the springtime, the change occurred on May 1. The dark coats and ties were replaced by light blue shirts with bow ties. Not only that, but the change was reported in the Pensacola News Journal. Here is the report:

“PENSACOLA POLICE OFFICERS WILL DON SUMMER GARB TODAY”

“Pensacola’s finest, having laid their uniform coats away in moth balls, will preen before the public today in official summer attire, according to an announcement by Eugene S. Forsythe, public safety director.

With the exception of watch No. 1, which holds forth from midnight to 8 AM, the entire force will display their new finery before adulating feminine hearts. The officers will wear light blue shirts with Sam Browne belts, blue trousers and blue caps.

‘The midnight watch will hold up on the transformation until May 15,’ said Forsyth.”
